Sapporo is the largest city in Hokkaido and the fifth-largest in Japan, home to approximately 1.97 million people. Established in 1869 as the administrative hub of the newly opened Hokkaido frontier, the city was laid out on a grid system inspired by North American urban planning — making it unusually easy to navigate for international visitors.
The city is internationally recognised for the Sapporo Snow Festival, held every February, which transforms Odori Park into a spectacular gallery of snow and ice sculptures drawing over two million visitors. In summer, the same park bursts into colour with lilac blossoms, outdoor beer gardens, and live music.
Sapporo is equally celebrated as a culinary destination — birthplace of Sapporo miso ramen, home to some of Japan's finest fresh seafood at Nijo Market, and the origin of Sapporo Beer, brewed here since 1876. The Susukino district, just south of Odori Park, is one of Japan's largest entertainment precincts outside Tokyo and Osaka.
